ParaEducators: Supervision and Evaluation of ParaEducators

Supervision and Evaluation of ParaEducators

July 31, 2009

• A Paraeducator assigned to an itinerant professional may work with an exceptional child when the professional is not in the building only if the professional works directly with both the child and the paraeducator at least twice a week. If the itinerant professional is not present each day, the paraeducator shall be assigned to, and be supervised by, a special education teacher, general classroom teacher or designated building administrator.

• Instructional paraeducators shall be directly supervised and evaluated by the special education professional to which they are assigned. Overall supervisory and evaluative responsibilities rest with the principal as they do for other school staff members.

• Written evaluations with resulting conferences will be held as often as needed, but not less than the minimum evaluation procedures stated in the evaluation instrument.

• The evaluation procedures and the summative evaluation form are available for download here.
